28-Year-Old Woman Dies by Suicide After Alleged Dowry Harassment

Nagpur, India: A 28-year-old woman, who was facing dowry harassment, died by suicide at her home near Kumbhakar College in Nagpur. The police have arrested her husband, Shailesh Gulabrao Dhoble, and also named his mother, Revati Dhoble, as an accused.
The woman, Priyanka Dhoble, married Shailesh on 3rd January 2024. Just a month after the wedding, she told her mother that Shailesh would beat her after drinking alcohol. He was angry that her family had not given a gold ring and chain, did not cover all wedding costs, and did not meet his demands.
Priyanka’s mother, Sandhya, who works as a labourer, tried to fulfil some of the demands. She replaced the bed and television that were gifted during the wedding. But the harassment continued. Shailesh and his mother did not allow Priyanka to talk to anyone. In October 2024, Shailesh even tried to strangle her.
The demands increased during festivals. They asked for money, clothes, and even an air conditioner. Unable to bear the torture, Priyanka stayed at her mother's house for two and a half months. In December 2024, Shailesh convinced her to return, promising things would change.
On 3rd January 2025, Priyanka’s uncle gifted her ₹10,000 for her first wedding anniversary. But Shailesh took the money and spent it on alcohol. On 3rd March, he and his mother fought with Priyanka again, demanding more money. She told her sister over the phone that she was being harassed.
At 9:24 pm, Shailesh said Priyanka was not opening the bedroom door. Later, at 10:18 pm, he claimed that she had hanged herself. The Ganeshpeth Police first registered the case as an accidental death, but after Priyanka’s mother complained, they charged Shailesh with dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. He has been arrested, and his mother has also been accused.
