Nagpur, India: Nagpur police have busted an international cricket betting racket during the Champions Trophy match between Bangladesh and New Zealand. The raid took place on Monday evening at a house in Shilpa Society, Manish Nagar, Somalwada. Seven people, including a Nepalese national, were arrested.
According to police, the illegal betting had been going on for the past 7-8 days under the Beltarodi Police Station area. The accused were placing bets through an online ID called "SHABBY Online." At the time of the raid, they were caught betting on the live match.
The arrested suspects are Dinesh Lokchand Wardhani (42), Jaishankar Nandkishore Singh (26), Sunny Anil Kumar Jaswani (24), Vishal Kanhaiyalal Banwari (21), Tanula Amritlal Guruwani (29), Giriraj Peet Bahadur Khanna (32), a Nepalese national, and one online ID holder.
Police recovered 35 mobile phones, 4 laptops, 3 CPUs, 3 tables, 6 chairs, and an Activa scooter, worth around ₹7,60,000. The operation was led by DCP Detection Rahul Maknikar and ACP Dr Abhijeet Patil. Authorities are now investigating whether the suspects were linked to a larger international betting network.
To avoid suspicion, the accused pretended to be students when renting the house. They told the owner they were studying, and their use of laptops made the story believable. However, they were actually running a cricket betting racket.
Police are continuing the investigation and expect more arrests soon.
