Drunk Man Breaks into Female Doctor's Hostel Room at Daga Hospital
Nagpur, India: An intoxicated intruder entered a female resident doctor’s room in broad daylight on Sunday afternoon at Daga Smriti Government Hospital, highlighting significant safety concerns for resident doctors. This incident follows a similar security breach in August at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, renewing concerns about the safety of doctors in medical institutions.
Hearing the doctor’s screams, her colleagues quickly arrived to help and caught the intoxicated intruder, who was attempting to steal money from her bag.
Daga Hospital, which offers postgraduate courses under the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, and anesthesiology, has a three story hostel for residents. It houses 10 female doctors and 7 male doctors.
The incident reportedly took place around 2 p.m. when a man, appearing intoxicated, entered the premises, went up to the first floor, and entered a female resident doctor’s room.
The doctor found the intruder attempting to steal money from her bag and raised an alarm. Her cries for help drew other hostel residents to her room, leading to the intruder’s capture. He was later handed over to the police.
The doctors spontaneously decided to hold a ‘stop work’ protest on November 11, demanding better security within the hospital complex. The protest disrupted work that day.
In August, a female resident doctor at R.G. Kar Government Hospital in Kolkata was tragically raped and killed, prompting widespread outrage across the country.
Resident doctors throughout Maharashtra protested, calling for improved security. In response, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde instructed authorities to implement strict security measures in all government run public hospitals.
Despite these directives, the recent incident at Daga Hospital underscores ongoing lapses in enforcing security measures.
