After Futala Lake Fountain Failure, NMC Plans Similar Project at Gandhi Sagar

Nagpur, India: Gandhi Sagar Lake, a 275-year-old water body in Nagpur, is facing threats as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) plans to install a large fountain at the historic lake. This has raised concerns among locals and environmentalists, especially after a similar project failed at Futala Lake.

The lake, built during the Gond Dynasty, was originally created as a water supply for the city. Currently, the lake is being cleaned and its pollution is being removed as part of the government’s plan to rejuvenate water bodies in cities. Some work has already been done, such as building a retaining wall around the lake, but the main focus is on beautification projects.

The NMC also plans to build an auditorium at the lake to replace the old Bal Bhavan. However, the big project in the works is the fountain, and the NMC is currently consulting experts on how best to carry it out. While the project is still being planned, the NMC is aware of the problems faced with the Futala Lake fountain project, which was shut down after facing legal challenges.

Environmentalists had raised concerns about the impact the musical fountain would have on the ecosystem of Futala Lake, and the Supreme Court later stepped in to stop it. Despite this, NMC officials are unclear about why the Futala fountain was stopped, as it was managed by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT).

As the NMC moves forward with plans for the Gandhi Sagar fountain, many worry that the same mistakes might happen again. Experts continue to warn that such projects can harm the environment and the water body’s ecosystem.

While the NMC moves ahead with its plans, many hope that they will learn from past mistakes and make sure the city’s historic lakes are protected.
