AI in Journalism: Il Foglio Publishes First Fully AI-Generated Edition

Il Foglio, an Italian newspaper, has become the first in the world to publish an edition entirely created by artificial intelligence (AI). The four-page edition was released on Tuesday and is available both in print and online.

The newspaper’s editor, Claudio Cerasa, said this is part of a month-long experiment to show how AI is changing journalism and daily life. Recently, The Guardian reported that BBC News plans to use AI to create more personalised content.

“This is the first newspaper in the world made completely with AI,” Cerasa said. “AI did everything — writing, headlines, quotes, summaries, and even some jokes. Journalists only asked the questions and reviewed the answers.”

The front page includes an article about US President Donald Trump. It highlights how some of his Italian supporters criticise cancel culture but ignore Trump’s controversial actions. Another piece, called ‘Putin, the 10 betrayals’, talks about how Russian President Vladimir Putin has broken promises over the last 20 years.

Page 2 discusses how many young Europeans prefer “situationships” instead of traditional relationships. The last page features AI-generated letters to the editor, where one reader asks if AI will replace humans. The AI responded with humour, saying: “AI is a great innovation, but it still can’t order a coffee without getting the sugar wrong.”

Cerasa said the AI edition is a “real newspaper” filled with news, debates, and analysis. He explained that the experiment helps understand how AI can be used in journalism.

“It’s just another Il Foglio made with intelligence. Don’t call it artificial,” Cerasa said.
