Nagpur, India: The Amravati Road flyover, which stretches from University Campus to the RTO, is expected to be completed by the end of May, according to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD). The flyover is almost finished, with only the landing near the RTO left to complete.
The construction of the 2.85-kilometre flyover started in May 2021. Initially, the project was expected to cost Rs 318 crore, but the price increased to Rs 388 crore after the length was extended by 500 metres. While the flyover is almost ready, there have been several delays.
A major issue has been the delay in getting permission from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to cut four heritage trees near the RTO area. The proposal for tree cutting was submitted over a year ago but has not yet been approved. Additionally, PWD had to acquire 400 square metres of land from the Maharajbagh Club for the project.
PWD also plans to demolish a small bridge near the RTO area, as it cannot handle the weight of the flyover’s landing. A new bridge will be built in its place.
Traffic from Law College Square to Bole Petrol Pump will be blocked from Monday, with drivers asked to take a diversion through Ahimsa Square. PWD officials expect to complete 75% of the new bridge within two months and then open one side for traffic. Once this is done, the rest of the old bridge will be demolished.
The flyover is expected to be fully open by the end of May, improving traffic flow on Amravati Road.
