Anthony Watson, a winger for the Lions and England, retires.
Due to a back ailment, England and Lions winger Anthony Watson announced his retirement from all rugby on Friday. The 30-year-old failed to recover from a back injury that began in January 2024, despite playing 56 tests for England and five for the British and Irish Lions.
On December 1, he played his final game while taking painkillers for his Leicester club. His surgeon advised Watson to quit playing. The highlight of Watson's career was the 2016 Grand Slam, where he scored three of his 23 career tries and won the Six Nations three times.
The Six Nations triumph was remarkable because it came just months after England's disastrous loss in the pool stage of their home Rugby World Cup in 2015.
Along with winning the junior world championship in 2013 and the Under-20 Six Nations in 2012 and 2013, he also started in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final loss to South Africa.
