At the Olympics in Paris, athletes critique "anti-sex" cardboard beds
The Olympic cardboard beds, so-called because they are anti-sex, are back. The mattresses, which are made of recyclable cardboard, gained notoriety in 2021 after an athlete stated that they were "aimed at avoiding intimacy among athletes." But many had criticized the beds, questioning why Olympians, as elite athletes, did not receive better beds that met their comfort standards.
The cardboard beds at the Paris Olympics are apparently created in France and are 100 percent sustainable. A number of athletes tested them and posted videos to social media.
Australian tennis players Ellen Perez and Daria Saville recorded themselves doing volleys, squat jumps, step-ups, and other exercises on the beds.
Despite the pressure, the beds held up. "Testing out the cardboard beds at the Olympic Village," was the caption that the Australian athletes used when they posted the video to Instagram.
Even though the beds passed the durability test, several athletes claim they are quite uncomfortable. Tilly Kearns, an Australian water polo player, posted a video after spending a night in bed. Even the mattress's soft side, according to her, was excessively rigid.
