Bangladeshi National Linked to Saif Ali Khan Attack; Accused Remanded Till Jan 24
Mumbai, India: Mumbai police have released Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national detained in Chhattisgarh, in connection with the January 16 attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. Shehzad, who entered India illegally and used the alias Bijoy Das, was initially arrested in Thane.
According to police, Shehzad entered Khan's Bandra residence in the early hours of January 16 by climbing a pipe and accessing the 12th floor through a bathroom window. Once inside, he was confronted by the actor’s staff, leading to a heated argument where Shehzad allegedly demanded ₹1 crore. Khan intervened, attempting to stop him, but Shehzad stabbed the actor in the back and fled the scene using the same route.
Investigators revealed that Shehzad slept at a Bandra bus stop until 7 a.m. on the day of the incident before travelling to Worli. Police later recovered tools, including a hammer, screwdriver, and nylon rope, from his bag, suggesting possible involvement in other crimes.
Shehzad reportedly discovered he had attacked a Bollywood star only after seeing news reports and social media posts about the incident.
The investigation faced challenges when a Bandra police officer took the building's CCTV recorder without sharing it with the Mumbai Crime Branch, which may have delayed efforts to track Shehzad.
Originally from Jhalakathi district in southern Bangladesh, Shehzad had been living in Mumbai for five months, working odd jobs such as housekeeping. The police continue to probe his background and possible links to other criminal activities.
