Besa-Pipla Roadwork Delayed as Citizens Oppose Tree Relocation
Nagpur, India: The Besa-Pipla Nagar Panchayat has paused the relocation of 60 trees planned for the widening of the road between Besa Square and Pipla village. This decision came after objections from environmental activists and local residents.
The road widening project aims to make the road 70 feet wide to handle the growing traffic caused by rapid development in the Besa-Beltarodi area. To clear space, the administration planned to move 60 roadside trees to open plots near Pipla village.
Activists and locals raised concerns, saying trees often don’t survive relocation in Nagpur’s climate. They also pointed out damage caused to the trees during the moving process.
Dr. Vilas Yeole, a scientist from CSIR-NEERI overseeing the relocation, admitted the survival rate of relocated trees is about 60%. He said the team is using scientific methods to improve survival chances, such as applying a special paste to heal tree wounds. So far, 27 trees have been moved, with 30 more waiting.
Chief Officer Bharat Nandanwar said the tree relocation is on hold due to protests. The focus has shifted to moving electricity poles and other utilities to continue the road work.
The road from Besa Square to Pipla village is too narrow and full of potholes, causing problems for heavy vehicles and regular traffic. The project is essential to improve the road conditions and handle the area’s growing population and traffic.
Balancing development with environmental protection remains a challenge for the administration.
