Big Ganesh Idols to Be Immersed Outside Nagpur City This Year
Nagpur, India: Devotees in Nagpur who plan to install Ganesh idols taller than four feet will need to wait another year for immersions within the city limits. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is still constructing three artificial tanks that are meant to accommodate large idols, and the work is not expected to be completed in time for this year's Ganesh festival.
The NMC is building these tanks at three locations: Gorewada, Kachi Visa Playground in the Lakadganj area, and Police Line Takli ground. Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department at NMC, mentioned that efforts are being made to finish the tank at Kachi Visa Playground before the festival. However, the tanks at Gorewada and Police Line Takli will not be ready until next year. "Immersion of large idols in these tanks will have to wait until next year," Dr. Mahalle said.
The construction of these tanks is part of the NMC's initiative to provide an eco-friendly option for idol immersion and to reduce pollution in natural water bodies. Once completed, these tanks will allow devotees to perform immersions within the city, reducing the need for long-distance travel.
Currently, devotees travel to Koradi for the immersion of larger idols, and they will need to continue doing so this year due to the incomplete tanks.
A joint review meeting was held at Suresh Bhat Auditorium in Reshimbag, attended by senior officials from NMC, the Police Department, and the district administration. The meeting focused on ensuring a smooth and safe Ganesh festival and immersion process in the city. It was chaired by Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singal and included District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, Joint Commissioner of Police Aswathi Dorje, and Additional Municipal Commissioner Aanchal Goyal, along with representatives from Ganesh Mandals and NGOs.
During the meeting, officials urged citizens to celebrate the Ganesh festival in an eco-friendly manner and to refrain from spreading rumors. This year, NMC has waived all fees normally collected from Ganesh Mandals and plans to install 413 artificial tanks across the city for immersing smaller idols. Additionally, mobile immersion tanks will be available in all 10 zones of the city.
Dr. Singal called on residents to be cautious and avoid spreading rumors that could lead to unrest during the festival. The Police Department is prepared to handle any challenges that may arise. Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari also encouraged citizens to use the artificial tanks for idol immersion and avoid polluting natural water bodies in the city.
