Biodiversity in Focus: SEWA's Wildlife Week Activities in Gondia
Vidarbha, Gondia, India: Environment and Wildlife Assemblage (SEWA), an NGO dedicated to preserving biodiversity, recently organized several events in observance of ‘Wildlife Week.’
At the start of Wildlife Week, a public awareness program on Sarus crane and wildlife conservation was held at Jagat High School in Ghattemani village. The event was a joint effort by the SEWA NGO, the forest department, and local Sarus crane supporters (Sarus Mitras).
The following day, a cycle rally was held in Gondia City to promote public awareness about wildlife and environmental conservation through slogans. A workshop on ‘Sarus Conservation’ was also conducted by the Gondia forest department in collaboration with SEWA and the Sarus Mitras.
During the workshop, future strategies for Sarus conservation were discussed. In additional awareness programs held at Sant Kabir High School in Sioni and Sant Jayramdas Aadiwasi School in Kamtha, students were educated by the team through a wildlife film screening.
Later, SEWA and the Gondia forest department organized a nature walk for students from Jagat Science College at the Nawegaon-Nagzira corridor. Wildlife Week concluded with a safari at Nagzira.
Honorary wildlife warden Sawan Bahekar, DCF Pramod Panchbhai, along with Shashank Ladekar, Kanhaiya Udapure, Avijit Parihar, Dilesh Kushram, Gaurav Matale, Sushil Bahekar, Pratik Ladekar, Bhaskar Kapse, Hasin Chikhalonde, Dushyant Akre, Bablu Chute, Kailash Hemane, Nishant Kurve, and forest officials all played key roles in ensuring the success of the event.
