The much-anticipated Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World had a sluggish start at the Indian box office, earning only ₹4.3 crore on its opening day. Starring Anthony Mackie in his first solo outing as the new Captain America, the film has struggled to draw audiences, making it the second-lowest opening of Marvel’s Phase 5 after The Marvels.
Compared to previous MCU releases, Brave New World lagged significantly. Deadpool and Wolverine earned ₹21 crore on its first day, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made ₹7.3 crore, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania collected ₹8.4 crore. Even The Marvels, which had a poor run, opened to ₹2.5 crore in India.
The film, directed by Julius Onah, also stars Harrison Ford as Red Hulk. Despite its strong IMAX occupancy of 48.79%, the overall response has been lukewarm, with English 3D screenings recording only 19.75% occupancy and 2D screenings at 13.78%. Competing against the Hindi film Chhaava, its Hindi-dubbed version earned ₹1.5 crore, while the Tamil and Telugu versions brought in ₹35 lakh and ₹20 lakh, respectively.
With such a weak start, Captain America: Brave New World will need strong word-of-mouth and weekend growth to recover at the box office.
