Chiranjeevi's "Boy for Legacy" Statement Draws Criticism Online
Telugu actor Chiranjeevi has found himself at the centre of controversy following recent comments about his son Ram Charan's daughter and the desire for a male heir to carry on his family legacy. The remarks were made during the Brahma Anandam pre-release event, where Chiranjeevi, speaking about his grandchildren, said, "When I'm at home, it feels like I'm a ladies' hostel warden, surrounded by ladies. I keep wishing and telling Charan, at least this time, have a boy so that our legacy continues."
Chiranjeevi's comments, which expressed concern about not having a grandson, drew significant backlash, with many on social media labelling his remarks as misogynistic. Critics pointed out that his statement implied that only a boy can carry forward the family legacy, while girls could do so just as well. Many fans expressed disappointment, calling his words outdated and reflective of deep-rooted gender biases.
Chiranjeevi’s comments also sparked a debate on gender roles and the societal obsession with male heirs. One social media user remarked, "The obsession with having a male heir continues in 2025. It’s disappointing, but not surprising."
Despite the backlash, many acknowledged Chiranjeevi’s strong bond with his granddaughter, Klin Kaara, who was born in 2023. The actor had previously shared his joy over her birth, revealing her name, Klin Kaara, which is inspired by the Lalitha Sahasranamam and signifies transformative spiritual energy. He expressed his hopes for her as she grows up, adding that he believes she will imbibe these qualities.
Chiranjeevi, who has had a successful career in Telugu cinema, was last seen in Waltair Veerayya (2023), which was a hit, and Bhola Shankar (2023), which did not perform well. He is currently working on upcoming projects, including Vishwambhara and a film directed by Srikanth Odela. His son, Ram Charan, who starred in Game Changer, also has upcoming films in the works, including projects with directors Buchi Babu Sana and Sukumar.
