Cholesterol and vision problems creating a threat to Dementia
It's time to monitor your cholesterol! High cholesterol and untreated eyesight loss are two important new risks for dementia, which impairs memory and reasoning abilities, according to a recent Lancet Commission report. Sixty to seventy percent of instances of dementia have Alzheimer's disease.
According to the report, these problems represent 9% of dementia cases. High levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which typically increase around age 40, are associated with 7% of dementia cases; untreated visual impairments account for 2% of cases. Thus, monitor your cholesterol levels and have your eyes checked.
The research, authored by 27 leading authorities on dementia, emphasizes how crucial it is to control cholesterol and take care of visual problems in order to reduce the risk of dementia.
The World Health Organization (WHO) lists dementia as the seventh biggest cause of mortality globally, therefore this new research is especially pertinent to India.
Key author of the paper Suvarna Alladi, a professor of neurology at NIMHANS in Bengaluru, notes that 8.8 million people in India suffer from dementia, accounting for 7.4% of the country's senior population.
"While age is still the greatest risk factor for dementia, this new research shows why screening for and treating vision loss, as well as controlling cholesterol levels in older adults, should be given top priority in order to help lower the number of dementia cases," the expert says.
