Cyber Fraudsters Target Vehicle Owners with Fake Number Plate Registration Links

Nagpur, India: Cybercriminals are targeting vehicle owners who are trying to install high-security registration plates (HSRPs). They are sending fake registration links through social media and messaging platforms, tricking people into sharing their banking details, which the fraudsters then use to drain their accounts.
This scam has impacted vehicle owners in cities such as Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Nashik. The Maharashtra government has made HSRP installation mandatory for 2.10 crore vehicles registered before 2019, with a ₹10,000 fine for non-compliance starting in April. Because of this, many vehicle owners are hurrying to register online, making them easy targets for cyber scams.
Scammers are sending messages that promise quick HSRP registration, such as "Register for HSRP in one minute and get your new number plate delivered home," along with fake links. When users click on these links, they are asked to enter their vehicle details and then their banking information, including ATM and debit card details. Eager to finish the process quickly, many victims unknowingly share their sensitive information, giving fraudsters access to their accounts and allowing them to steal money.
Authorities are warning vehicle owners not to click on suspicious links and to register only through official government websites. Cyber police are urging people to stay alert and make sure they use only authorized agencies for HSRP registration.
Stay Safe from Cyber Fraud:
- Avoid clicking on unknown links for number plate registration.
- Use only the government’s official website for HSRP registration.
- Report suspicious messages to cybercrime authorities.
