Does your body experiences Hypnotic Jerks at night? Know how to avoid
Have you ever had the experience of feeling your body jerk just before you go to sleep, causing you to jump and briefly wake up? Or occasionally, you merely twitch in your sleep rather than waking up.
This unexpected bodily reaction is known as a hypnic jerk, and it happens more frequently than you might think. It's an abrupt, fleeting involuntary contraction of the muscles that usually happens as you go from being awake to sleeping. Although hypnic jerks are common, they may cause you or your partner to have trouble sleeping.
To avoid hypnic jerks while you sleep, Dr. Amy Shah, MD, a nutrition specialist, explains what to avoid before bed. Avoid these things at least three hours before going to bed.
1. Caffeine- Our friend that gets us through the day is caffeine. This stimulant helps you stay awake and focused. However, it can cause sleep disturbances if taken late at night. It makes sense that consuming coffee or any other energy drink too close to bedtime raises the risk of hypnic jerks because caffeine keeps the brain alert.
2. Stress- Stress alters the brain and causes obsessive overthinking, which makes it difficult to fall asleep. It keeps the brain more alert and stops the muscles from resting. Not only does sleep become less restful and of worse quality, but hypnic jerks also become more common. The body finds it more difficult to relax, making the shift from wakefulness to sleep more difficult.
3. Workout- This may surprise you because regular exercise has been shown to increase sleep quality and has a good effect on the circadian rhythm. However, think about not working out three hours before bed. Exercise that is too strenuous and intense soon before bed raises heart rate and adrenaline, which makes it more difficult for your body to relax.
