Eco-Friendly Roads Take Shape as PWD Turns Plastic into Bitumen

Nagpur, India: In a step towards sustainable development, the Public Works Department (PWD) Division 2 has started building roads using recycled plastic waste. The eco-friendly project is being implemented on the Selu to Kalamba stretch in Kalmeshwar tehsil.
By mixing waste plastic with bitumen, PWD is creating stronger, longer-lasting roads while also reducing plastic pollution. This method not only helps protect the environment but also improves the quality of road construction.
To support the project, PWD organised hands-on training sessions for engineers, hot mix plant owners, and road contractors. The sessions included practical demonstrations on how to use plastic in bitumen macadam and how to properly measure and mix materials at hot mix plants.
Executive Engineer Chandrashekhar Giri explained that the training focused on both the technical and practical aspects of road construction. Participants learned how to synchronise the mixing process using electronic and mechanical methods, ensuring a high-quality and consistent output.
This innovative project provides engineers and contractors with valuable knowledge about using recycled plastic in road construction. The PWD hopes to expand the use of this method across other parts of the region to promote greener and more sustainable infrastructure.
