Elderly Woman's Life in Jeopardy After Snake Bite
An elderly woman, Meenabai Kalam, is currently fighting for her life after being bitten by a 4-foot-long black snake. The situation took a dire turn when a private hospital refused to treat her unless a sum of Rs 10,000 was paid upfront, a cost the patient could not afford. Consequently, she had to be admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Meenabai Kalam's life hung in the balance as she lost crucial time during her transfer from one hospital to another. This delay in medical attention occurred due to the financial constraints and inability to pay the demanded amount.
Meenabai Kalam and her husband work at a farmhouse in Satnavari village on Amravati Road. On the night of October 31, while they were asleep in a hut, a snake bit her. She woke up, turned on the lights, and discovered the snake inside their hut. With the help of a neighbor, the couple managed to kill the snake using a stick.
Desperate for medical help, Meenabai, along with her husband and sister, rushed to a private hospital. However, the hospital administration insisted on the payment of Rs 10,000 before admitting her, a sum beyond the means of the financially disadvantaged couple.
Unable to meet the hospital's financial demands, a dejected Meenabai Kalam was forced to return home along with her sister. Fortunately, someone in their area alerted local snake rescuers about the dire situation. In response, snake rescuer Neetish Bhandardkar took immediate action and sent Amit Vanzari, a fellow snake rescuer, to transport the patient to GMCH. In the meantime, other members of the snake rescuer team, including Shubham Thakur, Praveen Tule, Swapnil Chaudhary, and Lucky Khalode, swiftly organized the necessary paperwork for her admission to ward no. 52 at GMCH, ensuring that the patient received the immediate treatment she needed.
