In preparation for the highly anticipated 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the upcoming assembly polls scheduled for later this year, the Election Commission of India has initiated "first level checks" (FLCs) of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and paper trail machines.

The FLCs involve a comprehensive assessment of the machines, including the conduct of mock polls. This nationwide exercise will be carried out in multiple phases, covering all constituencies across the country. Even the vacant Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, following the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case, will be included in the process. The Election Commission has confirmed that FLCs will also be conducted in the five poll-bound states of Rajasthan, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh, as well as in assembly and parliamentary seats where by-elections are due.

During the FLCs, engineers from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) will meticulously inspect the EVMs and paper trail machines for any mechanical flaws. If any machines are found to be faulty, they will be sent back to the manufacturers for repair or replacement. To ensure transparency, representatives from various political parties will be present during the mock polls to observe the functioning of the machines.

The Election Commission's proactive approach in conducting FLCs is aimed at ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of EVMs and paper trail machines during the upcoming elections. By identifying and rectifying any issues well in advance, the Commission is determined to uphold the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.

Political parties and stakeholders are closely monitoring the FLCs, as the accuracy and reliability of EVMs continue to be subjects of debate. The Election Commission's efforts to involve all stakeholders in the process demonstrate its commitment to maintaining transparency and addressing concerns related to electronic voting.
