EOW Cracks Down on ₹3 Crore Scam, Arrests Ex-Deputy Mayor Chhotu Bhoyar
Nagpur, India: Former Deputy Mayor and Congress leader Ravindra alias Chhotu Bhoyar has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in a ₹3 crore fraud case involving Poonam Urban Credit Co-operative Society. The case, registered six years ago, has now caused concern among local Congress leaders.
The scam occurred at the co-operative society in Reshimbagh, where the board of directors approved loans using fake documents. These loans were given without checking the financial background of the applicants, leading to heavy losses for the society. Eventually, the society couldn’t return money to its customers.
In 2019, an investor named Harshvardhan Jhanjhar filed a complaint, and the EOW began investigating. So far, 11 people linked to the case have been arrested, including Bhoyar, who was previously the society’s president.
Bhoyar had avoided arrest by applying for anticipatory bail, but his request was recently denied. EOW officials raided his house on Tuesday night but didn’t find him. He was arrested on Wednesday morning after returning from Mumbai.
The court has sent Bhoyar to police custody until 25th January, and the investigation continues.
