Fadnavis Warns Rioters: Pay for Damage or Face Bulldozer Action

Nagpur, India: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that rioters responsible for damaging public property during the recent Nagpur violence will have to pay for the losses. If they fail to do so, their assets will be seized and sold.

Fadnavis warned that strict action would be taken where needed. “The damage caused will be recovered from the rioters. If they don’t pay, their property will be sold. Bulldozers will be used if necessary,” he said.

The violence erupted in central Nagpur on March 17 after rumours spread that a “chadar” with holy inscriptions was burnt during a protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which was demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

Fadnavis said that 104 people have been arrested based on CCTV footage, and more arrests are expected. “Police action will be taken against all those involved in the riots or helping the rioters. Those spreading rumours on social media will also be held accountable,” he said.

So far, authorities have identified and removed 68 misleading social media posts.
