Father-Son Duo Booked for Using Fake Number Plates on Mercedes to Avoid Traffic Fines

Nagpur, India: In a strange attempt to avoid traffic fines, a father and son from Nagpur have been booked for using fake number plates on their Mercedes-Benz. The fraud came to light when the car was found parked illegally in the city and flagged by the traffic police, leading to the registration of an FIR.

The accused have been identified as Harish Devicharan Tiwari (50) and his son Yash Harish Tiwari (25), residents of Pragatisheel Colony on Wardha Road, Nagpur. The duo owned a Mercedes-Benz with registration number MH 31 EX 9993. To evade e-challans for traffic violations, Yash allegedly replaced the original number plates with fake ones belonging to a car registered in Mumbai. The fake plates, MH 02 DZ 5061, belonged to a car owned by Harneet Manjeet Singh Arora, a resident of Mira Road, Mumbai.

This deception led to e-challans being sent to Arora, despite him not having driven the car in Nagpur. Records showed the Tiwari family violated traffic rules at least four times using the fake number plates.

The scam was uncovered on April 17 when Surendra Pagare, a traffic constable from the Sonegaon Division, noticed the Mercedes parked near Poonam Mall at Alankar Square. When he checked the vehicle’s registration using the e-challan machine, the system showed Arora as the owner. After contacting Arora, he confirmed his car was still at his home in Mumbai.

Harish Tiwari soon arrived at the scene with his wife, claiming the vehicle as his own. When asked for the car's documents, he called his son, Yash, who gave unclear answers. Suspecting foul play, Pagare informed his superiors and had the vehicle towed to Sitabuldi Traffic Office.

The next day, the Tiwari family provided the car documents, which confirmed that the vehicle’s original registration number was MH 31 EX 9993. It was clear that the Tiwari family had switched the number plates to mislead authorities. Following a complaint by Constable Pagare, a case was registered at Bajaj Nagar Police Station.

Two Overspeeding Fines Sent to Mumbai Car Owner

Meanwhile, Harneet Arora, the rightful owner of the Mumbai-registered car, received two overspeeding fines for violations committed in Nagpur. Shocked by these fines, he later discovered that someone had driven his car with the fake number plates in Nagpur. Arora then filed a complaint with the Kashimira Traffic Division in Mumbai.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Archit Chandak, has warned that using fake or altered number plates is a serious offence, with strict action to be taken under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Motor Vehicles Act.
