Firearm Holders in Nagpur Ordered to Surrender Weapons Ahead of Assembly Elections
Nagpur, India: Following the implementation of the model code of conduct for the upcoming Assembly elections, which started on October 15 and will be in place until November 25, District Collector and Election Officer Dr. Vipin Itankar has instructed all licensed firearm holders to surrender their weapons at the nearest police station by October 17.
The order, issued on October 17, requires all licensed firearm holders to comply within three days. This action is based on Section 21 of the Arms Act of 1959 and is intended to help ensure a smooth election process.
The order makes an exception for communities that have a traditional and legal right to carry weapons, as long as they do not engage in violent activities. However, if any members of these communities are found disrupting law and order or interfering with the peaceful election process, the district administration has the authority to confiscate their weapons.
The order also exempts weapons carried by security personnel responsible for law enforcement, bank security, and the protection of public property. However, it is the responsibility of the respective banks or institutions to ensure that their security staff do not misuse their firearms during the election period.
In special cases, individuals who wish to be exempt from surrendering their firearms can submit an application through their local police station to the District Screening Committee for review. The order will be enforced from October 15 to November 25, and any violations will lead to legal consequences for those involved.
