Futala Lake: Survey To Remove Illegal Encroachments ; MAFSU Investigation Required

Nagpur, India: In a major step, the City Survey Department will carry out a detailed measurement of Futala Lake and its catchment area on February 24 and 25. The goal is to identify encroachments, recover government land, and take legal action against illegal structures.
The survey covers 63.42 acres, including Futala Lake (57.30 acres) under PWD Division One, Nagpur Circle, and a 6.12-acre catchment area owned by MAFSU. Reports since 2022 have highlighted illegal encroachments, with unauthorized structures built and land converted into private property.
After receiving complaints from West Nagpur MLA Vikas Thakre, Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule ordered immediate action during a meeting on February 12, 2025, where he reprimanded officials from NMC, PWD, and MAFSU. In response, PWD and MAFSU have initiated legal proceedings and issued removal notices.
Gittikhadan Police have filed cases against Kamlesh Chaudhary, his mother Meena Chaudhary, and his brother Mukesh Chaudhary under BNS, the Environment Protection Act, and the MRTP Act. In 2023, an illegal restaurant linked to the Chaudhary family was demolished, and Meena Chaudhary was charged with unauthorized construction.
PWD Executive Engineer Abhijit Kuchewar confirmed that the two-day survey will begin on February 24. As legal proceedings continue, authorities aim to reclaim Futala Lake’s land and restore it to its original condition.
