Gorewada Rescue Centre Faces Criticism Over Unofficial Visits Despite CZA Warning

Nagpur, India: The Gorewada Rescue Centre and Transit Treatment Centre in Nagpur, originally established for the treatment and rehabilitation of wild animals, have become unofficial "picnic" spots for local politicians and bureaucrats, despite a warning from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in 2022.

According to CZA guidelines, these centres are meant solely for the medical care and housing of problematic wild animals. Only forest officials, veterinarians, and staff directly involved in rescue and rehabilitation efforts are permitted to enter. However, recent incidents indicate that these rules are being routinely violated, posing potential risks to the animals.

In a recent example, a senior Indian Railways official stationed in Nagpur made an unofficial visit to the Gorewada Rescue Centre, reportedly under the direction of senior officers. The visit, like many others from politicians and bureaucrats, despite the CZA’s previous show-cause notice issued in 2022, which demanded an end to such unauthorized access.

A senior forest official, speaking anonymously, stated that while the centre initially complied with the CZA's notice, pressure from influential figures has led to continued violations. Since the notice, various high-profile visitors, including Members of Parliament, Legislative Assembly members, senior railway officials, and judicial officers, have toured the rescue and transit treatment centres to view the captive wild animals.

Wildlife experts and forest officials have raised concerns about the negative impact of these visits. They stress that the centres are not zoos and are intended for the care of ill and stressed animals. The presence of outsiders can further distress these animals, potentially leading to self-harm or the spread of infections.

Authorities are being urged to enforce stricter regulations to prevent such visits, prioritizing the well-being of the animals over unofficial tours by politicians and bureaucrats.
