Government to Launch 'Sahkar Taxi' to Challenge Ola and Uber

The Indian government is launching a new taxi service called "Sahkar Taxi" to provide an alternative to popular ride-hailing platforms like Ola and Uber. The announcement was made in Parliament on Wednesday.

Sahkar Taxi will register two-wheeler taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheeler taxis across the country. Unlike private companies, this service will ensure that profits go directly to the drivers instead of big corporations.

A similar service, Yatri Sathi, was introduced in West Bengal by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government. It started in Kolkata and later expanded to Siliguri, Asansol, and Durgapur.

In Karnataka, another app-based taxi service called Namma Yathri follows a similar model. It offers services like cabs, two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and pooling options, allowing drivers to keep more of their earnings while giving passengers affordable rides.

With Sahkar Taxi, the government aims to support drivers and provide more transport choices for the public.
