Nagpur, India: Maharashtra has confirmed 167 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) out of 192 suspected cases, according to health officials. So far, seven deaths have been reported, with one confirmed as GBS-related, while six are still being investigated.
Most cases have been found in Pune, including 39 in Pune Municipal Corporation, 91 in newly added villages, 29 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, 25 in Pune Rural, and 8 in other districts. At present, 48 patients are in Intensive Care Units (ICU), with 21 on ventilator support. A total of 91 patients have recovered and been discharged.
Health authorities have sealed 30 private water plants in Pune’s Nanded village, Dhayari, and Sinhgad Road area. These plants were found supplying contaminated water with E. coli bacteria. Some were operating without permission and lacked proper water treatment.
On 3 February, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya held a meeting with Maharashtra health officials to discuss testing, treatment, and prevention strategies.
GBS is a rare disease where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. Authorities are advising people to drink clean water and seek medical help if they notice any symptoms.
