High Court Orders PWD to Address Bridge Landing Problems in Jaripatka
Nagpur, India: The High Court has criticized Public Works Department (PWD) officials for not following its orders about two bridges in Nagpur. On Wednesday, the Bench of Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Vrushali Joshi asked why a PWD engineer had failed to check the sites as directed and warned of contempt of court action.
The engineer has been told to submit a detailed reply by December 18. This case involves two bridges: one from the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) to the Jaripatka Railway Overbridge (RoB) and another from Mecosabagh to the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI).
The court had earlier asked the PWD engineer to inspect these areas and report back within three weeks. However, the engineer did not submit the report. Advocate Shashibhushan Wahane said a five-member committee’s report on the flyovers had mistakes, and the Chief Engineer of PWD had been asked to explain.
The Jaripatka Shopkeepers Association also raised concerns about the safety and design of the bridges. They pointed out that changes to the bridge’s landing blocked a key road to Nazul Layout Colony, causing trouble for residents.
Another problem is with the Itarsi Bridge’s landing near Jaripatka. The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) told the court that the bridge ends near a cemetery, creating a dangerous situation for residents. Roads to nearby settlements are blocked, making it hard for school buses, fire trucks, and ambulances to reach the area.
The court has asked the PWD engineer to check this situation and submit a report by December 18. The judges stressed the need for quick action to fix these problems for public safety.
