High Court orders removal of 181 trees in the Ajni region
On Monday, the Bombay High Court's Nagpur bench issued an oral directive prohibiting the removal of 181 trees in the Ajni area in support of the Inter Model Station project until further orders. The Court further ordered that a response be sent in two weeks to NMC, RLDA, and Contractor.
A Public Interest Litigation has been launched by Swachh Association to safeguard Ajni Forest. Abhay Mantri and Justice Nitin Sambre presided over the hearing. On 54 acres of land, the Ajni Inter Model Station project will be developed in its first phase.
The High Court issued a temporary directive on April 25, 2023, stating that no trees might be chopped in the forest without the NMC's approval. In an application to the NMC, contractor Keystone is requesting authorization to remove 181 trees from the Ajni forest.
On March 1, the NMC asked residents to oppose to Keystone's application through notices placed in the city's two newspapers. The Swachh Association vehemently disagreed with Keystone's court application and approach.
