BJP Leader’s Son Sanket Bawankule Flees Scene After Hitting Multiple Cars with Audi in Nagpur
Nagpur, India: In a shocking incident early Monday morning of 9th August 2024, an Audi car owned by Sanket Bawankule, son of Maharashtra BJP President and former Cabinet Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, was involved in a high-speed crash that caused significant damage across several streets in Nagpur. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though multiple vehicles were severely damaged.
The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. when the speeding Audi (MH-40/CY-4040) collided with the back of a Maruti Suzuki A-Star (MH-31/BV-0721) near Hotel Centre Point on Central Bazar Road, Ramdaspeth. The A-Star, driven by Jitendra Shivaji Sonkamble, an employee of the Patrakar Club of Nagpur, lost control and crashed into a Hyundai Sonata (MH-31/EK-3939) ahead.
The reckless driving continued as the Audi then struck a Honda Activa scooter (MH-49/Z-8637), causing the rider to fall and sustain minor injuries. Witnesses reported that the Audi was Dodging between lanes through traffic, creating panic among other drivers. Several vehicles along Central Bazar Road, near Hislop College and Samvidhan Square, were damaged during the incident.
The police arrested the Audi driver, Arjun Hawre (27), along with his friend Raunit alias Rohit Chimtalwar (27), who was also present in the car. The Audi has been detained for further investigation. Hawre was subjected to medical tests, and blood samples were taken to check for any intoxication.
A case has been registered under Sections 281, 125, 125(a), and 324(2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Rumors suggested that sons of two politicians were allegedly racing along West High Court Road, which may have contributed to the crash. Eyewitnesses estimated the Audi was traveling at around 130 km/h at the time of the accident.
BJP Chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule acknowledged that the Audi is registered in his son’s name and called for a thorough investigation, emphasizing that the law should apply equally to everyone. "I have not spoken to any police official," he said, adding, "Those found guilty should face appropriate action."
