A total lunar eclipse, also known as a "Blood Moon," will take place on March 14, 2025. During this event, the Earth will come between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow over the Moon and giving it a reddish colour.
Will India See the Eclipse?
Unfortunately, the total lunar eclipse will not be visible in India. However, people in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and some parts of Asia will be able to witness it. The next total lunar eclipse visible in India will occur on September 7-8, 2025.
Timings of the Eclipse (EDT - Eastern Time)
For those in regions where the eclipse can be seen, here’s the schedule:
- Penumbral eclipse begins – 11:57 PM on March 13
- Partial eclipse begins – 1:09 AM on March 14
- Total eclipse begins – 2:26 AM
- Peak of the eclipse – 2:58 AM
- Total eclipse ends – 3:31 AM
- Partial eclipse ends – 4:44 AM
- Penumbral eclipse ends – 6:00 AM
How to Watch the Eclipse?
If you're in a region where the eclipse is visible, you can watch it with the naked eye—no special equipment is needed. However, using binoculars or a telescope can give a clearer view. For the best experience, find a dark place away from bright city lights.
Why is it Called a Blood Moon?
The Moon turns red during a total lunar eclipse because Earth's atmosphere filters out blue light, allowing red and orange shades to reach the Moon. Many cultures have associated this event with myths and beliefs, but it's simply a natural phenomenon.
For those who won’t be able to see it in person, many space agencies and websites will provide live streams of the eclipse.
