Nagpur, India: The Maharashtra Transport Department has extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) to June 30 due to the low number of installations. State Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar issued a circular announcing the extension on Thursday.
This is the third time the deadline has been extended after earlier deadlines of March 30 and April 30. So far, around 18 lakh vehicles in Maharashtra have installed HSRP plates. However, compliance in Nagpur district remains low.
HSRPs are special number plates that are tamper-proof and have a unique identification number and laser-etched code. These plates improve vehicle security and help prevent theft. They are mandatory for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019.
To make the process easier, the government has appointed three private agencies, and vehicle owners can either book appointments online or visit authorised centres to get the plates installed. Many vehicle owners have welcomed the deadline extension because of delays in securing appointments. However, some feel that further extensions should be avoided to ensure timely compliance.
A large number of older vehicles are yet to install HSRPs. This has led the Transport Department to increase awareness efforts. An official from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) said there is a possibility that the deadline may be extended again if the installation rate remains low.
Vivek Bhimanwar has urged vehicle owners to get their HSRPs installed before the June 30 deadline to avoid penalties and ensure compliance with safety regulations. The department hopes that this extension will help improve the installation rate and enhance vehicle security.
