IMD Advises Caution as Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds Set to Hit Vidarbha

Nagpur, India: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ warning for thunderstorms with lightning across several districts of Vidarbha over the next three to four days. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph and hailstorms are also expected in some areas.

Thunderstorms and Hail Expected

Thunderstorms with lightning are likely in Amravati, Akola, Bhandara, and Wardha on April 1. By April 2 and 3, the entire Vidarbha region is expected to experience similar conditions, with hailstorms predicted in parts of Bhandara and Gondia on April 3.

According to IMD, a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada, along with a north-south trough extending to Tamil Nadu, is influencing these weather conditions. The interaction of moist winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal is expected to bring thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds (30-60 kmph) across Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Konkan, Goa, and Maharashtra between March 31 and April 4.

Heatwave Warning for Vidarbha

In addition to thunderstorms, Vidarbha is also set to experience an above-normal number of heatwave days during April, May, and June, according to IMD. Most districts will see around eight days of extreme heat, with Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia likely to be the worst affected in April.

The IMD has advised authorities to take precautionary measures in line with the National and State Disaster Management Authority’s heat action plans. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are urged to take extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and exhaustion.
