IMD Forecast: Heavy Rains Expected in Vidarbha Starting September 24

Nagpur, India: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Vidarbha beginning September 24. This comes as the southwest monsoon, nearing its withdrawal, continues to bring wet weather into late September.

Pravin Kumar, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Nagpur, explained, “Widespread rains are expected due to a cyclonic circulation, which will likely result in moderate to heavy rainfall across the region.” He noted that while the normal withdrawal date for the southwest monsoon in Vidarbha is October 15, the upcoming rains are expected to last until the end of the month.

In Nagpur, moderate rain is anticipated from September 24-25, with additional light showers possible due to local weather formations. This rainfall is expected to lower temperatures, indicating the onset of the winter season.

Recently, residents of Nagpur have been enduring high temperatures due to dry conditions, with the maximum reaching 35.5 degrees Celsius on Friday—the highest for September in the region. Other areas like Akola, Bramhapuri, Wardha, and Yavatmal also recorded temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius.

Despite the recent dry spell, Vidarbha has seen above-normal rainfall this monsoon season, totaling 1,030.8 mm—14% more than average. Districts such as Buldhana, Gadchiroli, Wardha, and Yavatmal have reported excess rainfall during this period.
