India Takes Five Strong Measures Against Pakistan After Pahalgam Terror Attack

New Delhi, 23 April 2025: In response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 28 Indian tourists, the Government of India has taken five major steps aimed at increasing pressure on Pakistan. These actions signal a firm diplomatic and strategic response to what India has described as continued cross-border support for terrorism.
1. Indus Waters Treaty Put on Hold
India has temporarily suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a long-standing water-sharing agreement with Pakistan. Officials stated that the move is meant to assert India’s rights under the treaty and send a clear message following the attack.
2. Pakistani Visas Cancelled
Visas issued to Pakistani nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme have been revoked. All Pakistani citizens currently in India have been given 48 hours to leave the country.
3. Attari-Wagah Border Closed
The integrated check post at the Attari-Wagah border has been shut down, halting both passenger travel and goods transport between the two countries. This is expected to affect cross-border trade and tourism.
4. Diplomatic Reductions
India has expelled Pakistani military officials from its High Commission in New Delhi and called back its own military attachés from Islamabad. The Indian diplomatic staff in Pakistan is being reduced from 55 to 30 members.
5. Travel Advisory for Indian Citizens
A fresh travel advisory has been issued asking Indian citizens to avoid all travel to Pakistan. Those currently in Pakistan have been advised to return home as soon as possible.
These measures, announced by the Ministry of External Affairs, come amid rising tensions and growing public outrage over the attack in Pahalgam. The government has stated that these steps are necessary to safeguard national security and hold Pakistan accountable for harbouring and supporting terror networks.
International observers are watching the situation closely, urging both nations to exercise caution to avoid further escalation.
