Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna declares his retirement

Sumit Nagal, Rohan Bopanna, and N Sriram Balaji all lost their opening-round matches at Stade Roland Garros, bringing a tragic end to India's tennis quest at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The 68th-ranked Corentin Moutet of France defeated world No. 80 Nagal 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, despite Nagal's brave effort. In 76 minutes, the unseeded men's doubles combination lost to Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Édouard Roger-Vasselin, 7-5, 6-2.

Bopanna announced his retirement from Indian tennis after his early withdrawal in the Games, ruling him out of the Asian Games in Japan in 2026. Nonetheless, he will carry on competing for India in ATP Tour matches.

Indian tennis has not won an Olympic medal since Leander Paes' historic bronze in the singles competition at the 1996 Atlanta Games. In the mixed event in 2016, Bopanna came very near to breaking the curse, but she and Sania Mirza finished fourth.

Bopanna, who has previously declared his retirement from the Davis Cup, cited his victory over Ricardo Mello in the 2010 India-Brazil Davis Cup game as his best memory of his time as an Indian player.
