Introducing a new opportunity: Now you can have a dedicated connection for your electric vehicle (EV) at home

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has recently launched a program to simplify electric vehicle (EV) charging for residential customers. Previously, only charging stations were granted separate electricity connections for this purpose. However, under the new initiative, domestic consumers can now obtain a dedicated connection for charging their electric vehicles.

This development was made possible by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), which introduced a new tariff category exclusively for EV charging. The new rates, effective from April 1, were established and subsequently announced by MERC. To provide further details about the program, C.R. Mishra, Chief Engineer of MSEDCL's Special Projects Department, issued a circular outlining the scheme's provisions, including the option for domestic customers to acquire a new connection solely for vehicle charging.

MSEDCL clarified that the new connection is available to electric consumers who already have a residential electricity connection. The first separate connection for EV charging was recently granted to Nitin Gogai of Thane, marking the beginning of the program. With the increasing number of electric vehicles in the state, MSEDCL anticipates significant benefits for consumers through this initiative.

Under the new program, green meters will be installed for all connections approved for vehicle charging. The tariff has been set at a flat rate of 7.5 per unit, which includes wheeling charges. Unlike other tariff categories, this program does not involve progressive slabs. As a result, it is expected to provide a cost-effective solution for consumers since MSEDCL's standard tariff increases incrementally with higher consumption.

Previously, the tariff for charging stations was 6.73 per unit, including wheeling charges, until March. However, starting from April 1, the rate was revised to 7.5 per unit. Despite the increase, the tariff remains comparatively discounted, making it an appealing option for EV owners. It should be noted that any unauthorized use of the connection for purposes other than EV charging will be considered power theft, according to MSEDCL's guidelines.

The introduction of this innovative program by MSEDCL marks a significant stride in supporting the growing number of electric vehicles in Maharashtra. By providing dedicated connections for residential customers, MSEDCL aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles while offering a cost-effective and efficient charging solution.
