'Jaanata Raja': Restoring the Legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

The unconquerable spirit of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the warrior king of Maharashtra, was brought back to life on a spectacular Saturday evening at Yashwant Stadium in Dhantoli, Nagpur. 'Jaanata Raja,' a three-hour theatrical extravaganza, took centre stage in a series of shows spanning three days until January 15. This grand event was organized by Maharashtra State’s Cultural Affairs Department, district administrations, and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, commemorating the 350th anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation.

The inaugural day witnessed the presence of key figures such as Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister; Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister of Forests and Cultural Affairs; Dr Vipin Itankar, District Collector; Pravin Datke, MLC; Ashish Jaiswal, MLA; Krupal Tumane, MP; Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari, Municipal Commissioner; Dr Vikas Mahatme, Former MP; Jagdish Kadam of Maharaj Shivchhatrapati Pratishthan, Pune; and Kushal Jain.

During his address, Devendra Fadnavis remarked, “We all derive inspiration from the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, and the Government will persist in its efforts to carry forward the rich culture and history of Maharashtra.” Sudhir Mungantiwar added, “This presentation is part of a state-wide series of shows, providing a great opportunity for citizens to witness this mega-historical drama.” The grand production, involving over 200 artists and technicians, is a creation of the late Padma Vibhushan Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare. It has gained immense popularity in India and through international performances. Seventy artists from Nagpur played various roles in the drama.

The presentation skillfully transports the audience back to the 17th century, depicting visionary kingdom scenarios, Shivaji Maharaj’s daring raids on Mughal forts, and his commitment to justice, establishing an equitable society. The venue resonated with the clash of swords and powerful dialogues, vividly portraying the bravery and wisdom of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The enactment of Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation drew thunderous applause from the audience. 'Jaanata Raja' transcends being just a play; it is a journey through history, a celebration of culture, and a poignant reminder of ideals that continue to inspire us today. With two more performances scheduled on January 14 and January 15 starting at 6:30 pm, the saga promises to captivate audiences further.
