Kamptee Road Double-Decker Flyover to Open on October 5
Nagpur, India: After seven years of construction and traffic concerns, the Kamptee Road double-decker flyover is set to open for traffic on Saturday, October 5. While the Nagpur Metro has handed over traffic management to the Nagpur Traffic Department, concerns remain about traffic congestion at the busy Liberty Talkies and LIC Square intersections.
The new flyover may actually increase traffic problems between LIC Square and Samvidhan Square. The addition of the Kamptee Road flyover means there are now three flyovers—Sadar-Mankapur-Katol Road flyover, Ram Jhula flyover, and the new Kamptee Road flyover—converging in the short stretch between LIC Square and Samvidhan Square. Traffic issues have already been caused by the Sadar flyover, forcing police to divert vehicles via Residency Road, and the new flyover is expected to add to the chaos near LIC Square.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Archit Chandak, acknowledged the challenges but assured that the traffic department will deploy enough personnel to handle the situation. "We will monitor the traffic patterns for a week and then implement long-term plans to manage the flow," Chandak said.
Currently, vehicles coming off the Sadar fly over land between LIC and Samvidhan Squares, creating traffic chaos. Once the Kamptee Road flyover opens, traffic from the Kamptee side will also merge at LIC Square, and those coming from Sitabuldi will need to make a U-turn at Liberty Cinema to access the flyover. This has raised concerns about accidents and traffic congestion in the area, with additional traffic police already deployed to manage the situation.
The Sadar-Mankapur-Katol flyover, which lands between LIC and Samvidhan Squares, is already a source of blockages. With the Kamptee Road flyover landing directly at LIC Square, along with the existing Ram Jhula flyover, congestion on Residency Road and near LIC Square is expected to worsen. Residency Road remains a key route for vehicles accessing the new flyover, and the influx of traffic from CA Road and other areas could further complicate the situation.
The construction of the 5.67 km-long Kamptee Road flyover, which began seven years ago, faced multiple delays, including a nearly three-year halt due to land acquisition issues. Recently, Maha Metro secured the required land at LIC Square, expediting the construction of the flyover’s ramp and service roads. The project, with a cost of ₹573 crores, also includes five metro stations—Gaddigodam Square, Kadbi Square, Indora Square, Nari Road, and Automotive Square—and features the country’s first four-level transport system.
Nagpur Metro’s Public Relations Officer, Akhilesh Halwe, clarified that traffic management is the responsibility of the Nagpur Police, but Metro is ready to make changes if necessary.
As the long-awaited flyover prepares to open, questions remain: Will it solve Nagpur's traffic woes, or will it add to the congestion at LIC Square? Only time will tell.
