Maharashtra State Budget 2024: Fuel Tax Relief Skips Nagpur, Sparks Regional Debate

The Maharashtra State Budget 2024 has brought significant changes to fuel taxation, benefiting Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, while Nagpur has been left out. Presented by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar in Mumbai, the budget announcement has stirred discussions on regional disparities within the state.

In an effort to ease the financial burden on commuters, the government has reduced taxes on diesel and petrol exclusively for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane. Diesel taxes have been lowered from 24% to 21%, and petrol taxes adjusted from 26% plus ₹5.12 per litre to 25% plus ₹5.12 per litre.

These adjustments are projected to decrease petrol prices by approximately 65 paise per litre and diesel prices by about ₹2.07 per litre in Thane, Brihanmumbai, and Navi Mumbai.

Despite these tax breaks, Nagpur, despite being the state's Second Capital and grappling with high fuel costs, has not received any relief. This has sparked disappointment among Nagpur residents who argue for equitable treatment in statewide tax policies affecting essential commodities like fuel.

Local leaders and citizens in Nagpur have expressed frustration, urging the state government to extend similar tax exemptions to their city. They highlight the importance of balanced development across Maharashtra, especially amidst rising living costs exacerbated by soaring fuel prices.

As discussions on fuel tax disparities continue, Nagpur residents hope their concerns will be addressed to ensure fair economic policies across the state.
