Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Achieves Record-breaking 10,000 MW Generation for Second Consecutive Month
As summer temperatures soar in the region, the demand for electricity has surged as residents rely on power-hungry appliances to keep cool. Rising to meet this challenge, the state-run Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MahaGenco) has achieved a remarkable feat by exceeding 10,000 MW of electricity generation for the second consecutive month. On May 17 at 7.45 pm, MahaGenco recorded a generation of 10,070 MW, effectively meeting the state's power requirements as the demand reached 28,000 MW.
With the scorching summer expected to intensify in the coming days, the MahaGenco team has been instructed to be prepared for further amplifying power generation, considering the manifold rise in demand. Until the arrival of monsoon rains, power demands are projected to surge as citizens increasingly rely on air conditioners to combat the sweltering heat, particularly the humid climatic conditions. PAnbalgan, Managing Director of MahaGenco, commended the team's planning for Mission 8000 MW well in advance, anticipating the considerable increase in power demand during peak summer.
Since the month of March, MahaGenco has been actively building up coal stocks and ensuring the proper maintenance of generation units to mitigate any potential issues during April and May. In fact, back in March, MahaGenco surpassed the 10,000 MW generation milestone for the first time, with a power unit of approximately 10,102 MW being generated on March 17 at 8 pm. All the production units have remained online throughout this period.
The heavy rains experienced in March and April have proven advantageous for MahaGenco as they were able to increase production from hydro units due to ample water availability in the dams. By ramping up in-house production, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) did not have to rely heavily on private producers or the spot market, which would have incurred substantial financial costs. MahaGenco's power generation remains the most cost-effective option in the market, further benefiting consumers.
