Mary Kom leaves the athlete's organization of the IOA

Legendary boxer MC Mary Kom, a member of the executive committee of the highest sports organization, has resigned from her position as chair of the Indian Olympic Association's Athletes Commission (AC).

Six-time world champion Mary Kom stated in a Sunday message in the Athletes Commission WhatsApp group that she wishes to terminate her duties with the IOA. "IOA was enjoyable for me. IOA was a positive life experience for me. I regret to inform you that I have chosen to terminate my employment with IOA and am leaving. IOA, best wishes," she wrote.

Mary Kom has not provided a reason for her departure, according to a member of the IOA athletes' body, and they will wait for an official letter before making any decisions regarding the future.

The AC's members include Om Prakash Karhana, Shiva Keshavan, Gagan Narang, Bajrang Lal, PV Sindhu, Bhavani Devi, and Rani Rampal. Its vice-chairperson is table tennis player Sharath Kamal. Because he is a member of the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Abhinav Bindra is an ex-officio member.

When the new IOA, led by PT Usha, assumed power in November 2022, the 10-member AC was established. In accordance with IOC regulations, the athletes' body was created to speak for athletes and represent them, keeping them at the center of the decision-making process.

The chairperson is one of two AC members who serve on the IOA executive committee. Additionally, members of the AC are represented on a number of IOA committees. It is also in charge of establishing a route for National Sports Federations (NSFs) to form their own independent athletes' commissions, which will thereafter choose the IOA AC members.
