Medical Student Approaches HC After Missing Counseling Due to Missed Flight
Nagpur, India: A medical student who missed her postgraduate (MD) counselling session at AIIMS after failing to catch a flight has sought intervention from the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. The court has issued a notice to AIIMS, New Delhi, directing them to respond to the plea.
The petitioner, Kalyani Chakrawar, is currently a first-year MD student specializing in Radio Diagnostics at AIIMS Nagpur. She achieved an impressive 119th All India Rank in the INI CET exam held on November 10, 2024, for admission to postgraduate courses in AIIMS institutes nationwide. However, her inability to attend the initial counseling session, due to a missed flight, led to her disqualification from subsequent rounds of seat allocation.
Chakrawar has challenged the counselling rules in her petition, arguing that they are inconsistent and violate her fundamental right to education. She has urged the court to allow her participation in the upcoming counselling rounds and reconsider the strict disqualification norms.
Justice Abhay Mantri heard the case on Friday, with Advocate Anish Kathane representing the petitioner. After reviewing the petition, the court issued a notice to AIIMS New Delhi, asking for a formal response, and scheduled the next hearing for December 31, 2024. The court will also deliberate on whether to grant interim relief to the petitioner.
The case underscores the importance of balancing procedural rules with students' rights, particularly in high-stakes admissions processes.
