Messi's son plays his debut tournament in Argentina
Thiago, Lionel Messi's oldest son, followed in his father's footsteps by making his debut at the Newell's Cup in Rosario. In their U-13 campaign opener against Newell's Old Boys, Thiago and his Inter Miami squad suffered a 0-1 defeat.
Messi started playing football in Rosario. Several family members, including grandparents Jorge Messi and Celia Cuccittini, were in the stands to see Thiago play, along with his mother, Antonella Roccuzzo. Lionel Messi wasn't present.
Benjamín Suárez, the son of Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, Messi's colleague and close friend at Barcelona and now with Inter Miami, played with Thiago, who was substituted in the second half.
Following Inter Miami's early MLS playoff exit, Messi and Suárez are in Rosario. They attended a friendly match between Unión and Inter Miami's U13 team on Sunday at the same sports complex.
