Mumbai Govt Employee Scammed ₹3 Lakh in Fake Transfer Promise

Nagpur, India: A Mumbai-based government employee was allegedly cheated of ₹3 lakh by a woman who falsely claimed to be an office bearer of the Congress party and promised to arrange her transfer to Nagpur. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station.

The victim, Manisha Chandrabhan Paithe, 46, works with the Health Department in Mumbai. Since her husband’s passing in 2017, she has been looking after her two daughters, who are studying in Nagpur. Hoping to secure a transfer to be closer to them, she sought assistance from Anisha Mukhtar Shaikh, 44, a resident of Bijlinagar, who claimed to be the secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. Anisha assured Manisha that she had successfully managed similar transfers in the past and demanded ₹3 lakh to process the request.

Manisha handed over the money in the presence of Anisha’s husband, Mukhtar Shaikh, and their acquaintance, Dinesh Bansod. To build trust, Anisha even provided a written agreement on stamp paper, stating that the amount would be refunded if the transfer was not completed within three months. However, when the deadline passed, Anisha cited the Lok Sabha election code of conduct as an excuse for the delay. A second agreement was signed on June 14, 2024, but soon after, Anisha stopped responding to Manisha’s calls.

When Manisha visited Anisha’s maternal home to demand her money back, the accused allegedly refused and challenged her to take legal action. Left with no choice, Manisha filed a complaint at Sadar police station, and an investigation is now underway.
