Nagpur, India: The much-awaited redevelopment of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is finally moving forward. The Maharashtra Government will hand over 2,600 acres of land—including the airport premises—to the GMR Group in a formal ceremony scheduled for May. This marks the beginning of a major transformation aimed at turning the airport into a world-class passenger and cargo hub.
The development is expected to significantly boost economic growth in Nagpur and the Vidarbha region by improving air connectivity and generating large-scale employment.
Airport to Get Cargo Terminal, New Infrastructure
Currently, Nagpur Airport has the capacity to handle 17 aircraft. Over the next four years, the capacity will be expanded to accommodate 16 additional passenger aircraft and two cargo planes. A 20,000 metric tonne cargo terminal will also be built to support growing logistics needs.
The redevelopment plan includes improved airside infrastructure, new approach roads, parking spaces, hotels, and a modern Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower to enhance operational efficiency.
Development in Two Phases Over Eight Years
The GMR Group will carry out the airport upgrade in two phases across eight years. Work will begin immediately after the land transfer, starting with improvements to the terminal and passenger facilities.
In the first phase, a new runway measuring 4,000 metres in length and 60 metres in width will be constructed parallel to the existing runway. A new integrated terminal building will be developed at Shivangaon, covering an area of 75,000 square metres. This terminal will be capable of handling up to 40 million passengers annually and will feature modern amenities, taxiways, and better connectivity.
GMR Group was selected for the project after offering the highest revenue share to MIHAN India. Once completed, the upgraded airport is expected to position Nagpur as a major air and cargo hub in Central India.
