Nagpur Airport Runway Recarpeting to Finish Before PM Modi’s Visit

Nagpur, India: The recarpeting work of the 3,200-metre runway at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is almost complete. The final layer is expected to be finished in the next four days, and the entire work may be completed within a week. However, Mihan India Limited (MIL) has not yet given official confirmation about this.
Delays Due to Various Reasons
The runway work, which began on 1 October 2024, faced many delays. VVIP movements during the election period and limited time to work caused slow progress. The runway was supposed to be closed from 10 am to 8 pm daily for the work, but this schedule was not followed regularly.
After reports highlighted passenger inconvenience, the High Court took action and filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). It directed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other agencies to speed up the work. Following these orders, a second hotmix plant was set up in the AAI colony, and more workers and machines were deployed to finish the work faster.
Deadline Expected by 30 March
The contractor, KG Gupta Company from Indore, surveyed the site between June and September 2024 before starting the work. Although Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier set a one-month deadline on 23 December 2024, the work was delayed. Now, experts believe that the recarpeting will be finished by 30 March 2025.
No Official Confirmation Yet
Even though the work is almost done, Abid Ruhi, Senior Airport Director of Mihan India Limited, said that no official confirmation has been received yet. Once the work is completed, the runway will be fully functional, and the eight-hour closure will end, bringing relief to passengers.
