Nagpur Curfew Hurting Business During Festive Season, Say Mahal Traders

Nagpur, India: Traders from Itwari, Gandhibagh, and nearby areas have asked the police to lift the curfew quickly. They said the curfew, imposed after the recent riots, is hurting their business, especially with the festive season coming up.

On Friday, a group of traders from the Nagpur Chamber of Commerce Ltd (NCCL) met Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal to share their concerns. NCCL President Kailash Jogani said that traders have been losing ₹200 to ₹250 crore per day since the curfew started on Monday evening. He warned that if the curfew continues, many traders will not be able to survive.

Jogani said traders had stocked up goods for festivals like Gudi Padwa, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Navratri. They were expecting good business during this time, but with the markets closed for several days, they are facing big losses. NCCL has also sent a letter to the Chief Minister, asking to lift the curfew to help the traders.

Deepak Sharma, Secretary of Mahatma Phule Market Nagpur Building Vyapari Sangh, said that cooler manufacturers in the Cotton Market area are the worst affected. "This is the best time for selling coolers, but our shops have been shut since Monday," he said.

The group also included members of The Wholesale Cloth & Yarn Merchants Association, Gandhibagh, and other trade groups. They stressed that the market closures are causing heavy losses.

The curfew was put in place after violence broke out in the Mahal area on Monday. While the police are keeping the curfew for safety, traders are hoping the authorities will lift it soon to prevent more losses.
