Nagpur District Records 60.49% Turnout Amid Enthusiastic Rural Participation

Nagpur, India: Nagpur district recorded a voter turnout of 60.49% across 12 assembly constituencies during Wednesday’s elections, with rural areas showing greater enthusiasm than urban centres. Ramtek constituency led the district with the highest turnout at 71.27%, followed by Umred at 70.02%, and Katol at 66.70%.

In urban Nagpur city constituencies, Nagpur East topped with 58.70% voter turnout, while Nagpur Central saw the lowest at 55.01%. Other constituencies like Nagpur North (58.05%), Nagpur South (56.20%), Nagpur South-West (54.49%), and Nagpur West (55.68%) showed moderate participation.

Rural constituencies, such as Savner (66%), Kamptee (63.05%), and Hingna (58.10%), generally showed higher participation. Officials attribute the relatively lower urban turnout to less engagement from affluent areas compared to underdeveloped localities.

This pattern mirrors trends seen in the May 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the Nagpur parliamentary seat recorded 54.1% turnout compared to Ramtek's 61.1%.

Polling was largely peaceful, but minor skirmishes in East and Central Nagpur delayed final voting figures. Police quickly resolved the issues, and the election process continued smoothly elsewhere.

District authorities ensured better arrangements for elderly and specially-abled voters, providing transport and wheelchairs at polling booths. Complaints about missing names in the voter list, common during the Lok Sabha elections, were significantly reduced this time.

Despite efforts by political parties and the administration to boost turnout, the district fell short of the 75% target. Officials cited factors like student exams and migration of locals to other cities or abroad as reasons for the lower turnout.

Pleasant weather contributed to brisk voting early in the day, with a 44.45% average turnout reported by 3 PM. The final voter turnout figures for Nagpur district are expected on Thursday, once all data is compiled.
